My name is Patrick Walker, and I’m 19. I’m on a gap year before I go to York to study Politics and International Relations. I’m trying to use this time to travel to places and do things that I’d never get to do in later life: an opportunity to try some really new experiences.

Peru’s perfect for this. A country that has faced some harsh natural disasters and government mismanagement and corruption is a far cry from my rather privileged life in the UK. I’m very much looking forward to meeting the people that live there and understanding a part of the world that receives little media attention, as well as exploring the stunning scenery and rich history the country has to offer.
I’m apprehensive and excited in equal measure. Will I miss home, or will Peru be a liberation for me? I’ve got little idea of what to expect. Bags packed, flights booked. Let’s go.
